Breaking Learned Helplessness
Our Deepest Fear and Our Greatest Power
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, who are we to be brilliantly developing on our own? Actually who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us, and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same."
The Delusion of Insignificance
For too long, Ugandans have fallen for the delusion of insignificance - believing we are not able, not worthy, not fit, not good enough, not adequate, and not important. This causes us to give up on hope and completely breaks our spirit to fight for the deep longing for a developed Uganda by ourselves, not government.
Learned Helplessness: The Horse That Gave Up
Like a horse subjected to confinement, beatings, starvation, and electrocution as a young foal - even when grown and powerful enough to break free from a plastic chair - it remains trapped not by physical constraints but by learned helplessness.
Ugandans depict the same condition: failing to rise above poverty despite having the power within.
Pearl Foundation's Call to Action
We are called to partner with stakeholders and leaders to:
- Awaken the national conscience and people's unlimited power
- Acknowledge the deep longing for a different kind of world buried in human hearts
- Give hope, power, and capacity to overcome obstacles and inequalities
- Transcend unemployment and poverty in the social-economic sphere
"Unless we become the change we wish to see in the world, no change will ever take place" - Mahatma Gandhi
The Tenacity of the Human Spirit
The perseverance and endurance of Ugandans amidst poverty and high rates of unemployment (80%) depict the tenacity of the human spirit. This is the power we seek to unleash.
Stop Relying on Promises Alone
Only as we stop relying solely upon government promises and allow the positive, unlimited power and the giant within us to emerge - expelling the destructive delusion of insignificance from our inner selves - will true development begin.
Pearl Foundation believes in YOU. We see your power. We nurture your potential. Together, we break the chains of learned helplessness.
